VOR range - can distance be viewed?

Recommended Posts

  • RayProudfoot changed the title to VOR range - can distance be viewed?

If you have an aircraft that has a NAV1/2 DME switch the Morse Code for that VOR will start sounding when the range becomes active. The PMDG737 is one such aircraft.

On a recent flight the distance showed just under 80nm when the sound commenced. I know ILS frequencies have a much shorter range. Perhaps <20nm.

There are different values for the range stored in the BGL-files, depending on the navaid type:

VOR High = 195 NM

VOR Low = 60 NM

VOR Terminal = 38 NM

ILS = 27 NM

These are the values for the range distances stored in the files. But the question is how it is implemented in the simulator itself.  Are these ranges varying depending on the surrounding topography like in real life, or are all VORs tuneable within these ranges, regardless of other restrictions?

However, the current EFB database structure does not make use of this information. It would require a change in the database structure to allow this data to be used, but such a change is currently not planned.

Indeed, a question which is not easy to answer.

It’s hard to know what could be improved. 😁

Do you have a few examples of the four types listed and I’ll check the distance they become ‘active’ in P3D.
